2026 Key Leaders’ Summit Highlights

Aug 19, 2026

The 2026 Key Leaders’ Summit took place last Thursday, August 13 at Snoqualmie Middle School. Community leaders gathered to explore the topic of Transforming Behavior Through Connection with local operational psychologist Jeff Holguin, PhD.

Behavior is communication and can be easily misunderstood when context is overlooked; real healing, connection, and regulation happen through consistent, patterned, relational experiences—not one-time interventions.

PRESENTATION OVERVIEW

Dr. Holguin illuminated how modern leaders are operating under significant psychological and cognitive strain, which weakens their ability to lead with empathy. Overload, stress, decision fatigue, and burnout reduce perspective-taking, narrow attention, and increase reliance on mental shortcuts. Rather than viewing empathy failures as personal shortcomings, Holguin frames them as consequences of system conditions that deplete the brain’s capacity for connection and understanding.

This is where the science of empathy comes into play, distinguishing between cognitive empathy (understanding another person’s perspective) and emotional empathy (feeling another person’s emotions). Empathy can be strengthened through biological resilience practices such as sleep, exercise, stress regulation, mindfulness, and social connection. Holguin also examined common cognitive biases, especially the Fundamental Attribution Error, which causes leaders to judge others’ behavior as character flaws while excusing their own behavior based on circumstances. Leaders are encouraged to replace assumptions with curiosity, seek context before judgment, and recognize behavior as data rather than evidence of intent.

To help leaders apply empathy in practice, the presentation introduces the ACT Model: Accept what is happening without immediate judgment, Connect by deeply understanding the other person’s experience, and Transform that understanding into purposeful action. It also introduces Behavior Chain Analysis, a framework for identifying the circumstances, triggers, emotions, and consequences that drive behavior. Holguin concluded with the idea that empathic leadership improves engagement, retention, innovation, and trust, and recommends six core leadership commitments: managing cognitive load, understanding both types of empathy, building resilience, recognizing bias, practicing the ACT model, and analyzing behavior through context rather than character judgments.

Dr. Holguin specializes in what happens when humans are pushed to their limits. With a background that spans complex operational roles and advanced clinical training, he brings both scientific rigor and lived experience to the table. Jeff works with high‑performance teams around the world, teaching them how to stay resilient, adaptive, and effective under pressure. His methods blend physiology, behavioral science, and systems‑level thinking into practical tools for real‑world performance. His mission is simple: help teams build the clarity, cohesion, and resilience they need to thrive in demanding environments—not just survive them
